Mount Austin Café Guide (2026): 8 Verified Spots for a Half-Day Trip
Mount Austin is JB's densest café cluster, a 15–25 minute Grab ride from the CIQ. Here are eight verified cafés for 2026 — from serious matcha to a DIY gelato lab — with prices, hours and honest caveats.

Quick answer: Mount Austin is JB's densest café cluster — a 15–25 minute Grab ride (roughly 12 km) from the CIQ and the future Bukit Chagar RTS station. Eight verified spots below, from serious matcha and creative bakes to a no-entry-fee cat café and a make-your-own-gelato workshop. Budget RM8–30 per person for drinks and dessert, more for brunch mains. Pair it with the AEON Tebrau / Toppen / IKEA cluster five minutes away.
Read this first: prices and hours come from sources dated 2024–July 2026 (marked where older). Café hours here change often and several spots close one weekday — check Instagram or WhatsApp before you go. Hours appear only where a source documents them. None is halal-certified; no-pork/lard notes appear where sourced.
Getting there from the CIQ (and the RTS)
Mount Austin isn't walkable from JB Sentral — it's a Grab trip, with no public transport worth recommending. Treat it as a half-day: cafés first, then dinner and shopping at AEON Tebrau City, Toppen or IKEA Tebrau, a 5–10 minute hop further east — families can add Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park or Cow Play Cow Moo inside AEON Tebrau. To café-hop on foot near the checkpoint instead, see our cafés near JB Sentral guide.
The matcha and dessert specialists
Slow Day Cafe — matcha, hojicha, genmaicha, done properly
A first-floor shophouse unit at 2-01, Jalan Austin Heights 7/8, Slow Day is the pick for people who take matcha seriously — the menu spans matcha, hojicha and genmaicha. Eatbook's picks: the Cold Matcha Espresso (RM17.90) over the milkier Strawberry Matcha, and the star, Genmaicha Nama Gateau Cake (RM28). Hours (Eatbook, April 2026): Mon 12pm–5:30pm, Tue–Thu 12pm–6:30pm, Fri–Sun 12pm–10pm. Not halal-certified.
The Blue Door Coffee House — creative bakes, open till midnight weekends
Same street, different vibe: The Blue Door Coffee House (36A, Jalan Austin Height 7/8) hides behind a blue door on the first floor — inside, a queen-sized bed sits in the middle of the room. Signatures: the Matchamisu (RM24), made with Niko Neko matcha, and the Pistachio Cookies Mochi Croissant (RM18) — mochi inside a croissant, under pistachio cream. Hours: Mon–Thu 11am–10pm, Fri 11am–12am, Sat 10:30am–12am, Sun 10:30am–11pm. Not halal-certified; an earlier review notes no pork or lard is used.
The brunch-and-backdrop cafés
Bloom by Mok Mok — the floral brunch institution
Bloom by Mok Mok (87, Jalan Mutiara Emas 2A) is the elder statesman — garden-themed, dried-flower ceiling, fairy lights, a swing outside. The menu is proper brunch: Prawn Sando (RM26+) with tom yum notes, Fish & Chips (RM46+), Steak & Eggs (RM78+), and Kumo Ultimo soufflé pancakes (RM25). Open daily 11am–10pm. Not halal-certified, but uses no pork or lard.
KNOCKNOCK Cafe — colonial two-storey, daytime only
KNOCKNOCK (60, Jalan Mutiara Emas 5/9) is the colonial-manor option: two storeys, chandeliers and a pink floral ceiling above vintage props — rocking horses, porcelain vases, Greek-style sculptures. The fusion menu runs laksa pasta to steaks; 2024 reviews put lattes around RM16 and mains at RM26–88, praising the food and ambience but mixed on the coffee. Listed hours are Mon–Fri 10am–7pm, Sat–Sun 9am–7pm — the earliest closing on this list, from a 2024 source, so verify before a late-afternoon visit.
Kirin Coffee — the dopamine-drenched oddball
The newest and weirdest of the lot. Kirin Coffee (Unit G-03, Austin 18, Jalan Austin Perdana 3) is a two-storey "dopamine concept" café — blood-red walls, surreal art, a bikini-clad Ted the bear, Superman flying into a wall. Drinks and desserts start from RM7.90 and arrive with gimmick toppings: mini croissants perched on glasses, pop-culture cakes and, famously, a toothbrush. Open daily 11am–11pm (Eatbook, February 2026). Not halal-certified.
The experience spots
Cam Tea & Ember — roast your own milk tea, dress in hanfu
Cam Tea & Ember (吃茶趣; No. 12, Jalan Austin Heights 7/7) is a Chinese-style teahouse where each wooden table has its own electric stove. Brew stove-boiled tea sets — Snow Pear Black Tea or flower teas — from RM69.90, toast your own tea snacks (glutinous rice cakes, black sesame balls), or keep it simple with light milk teas from RM12.90. Extra: hanfu dress-up from RM24.90. Per its official site: Mon–Sun 10am–9pm, closed Wednesdays; reservations via WhatsApp (+60 11-6575 2868) recommended.
Meow Me Cat House — café with cats, no entry fee
Meow Me Cat House (28-01, Jalan Austin Height 7/7, first floor) is a café with resident cats rather than a full-on cat café: no entry fee, just a minimum spend of RM8 per person. Reviews highlight the tiramisu latte (RM17); genmaicha latte RM12, lemon cheese cake RM15. Be gentle with the cats and keep the volume down. Open Thu–Tue 12pm–9pm, closed Wednesdays (Eatbook, December 2025). Not halal-certified.
Siblings Gelato Lab — make your own gelato and bring it home
Siblings Gelato Lab (17-02, Jalan Austin Heights 8/3, upstairs from Loud Speaker karaoke) runs JB's standout dessert workshop: a hands-on session (roughly 1–1.5 hours) where you mix, cook and churn your own gelato, add toppings, and take it home — staff have been known to supply dry ice so it survives the trip back to Singapore. Minimum two pax; a detailed first-person review (October 2025) paid RM58 per pax weekdays, RM78 weekends, with 10% off in-store gelato and meals after. The workshop flavour rotates monthly; the display case runs pistachio, matcha, chocolate hazelnut and monthly specials. Book ahead via Instagram or an activity platform. Note: this is not the same business as Siblings Gelato on Jalan Ibrahim near town.

Practical tips
- Cluster smartly. Slow Day and Blue Door share Jalan Austin Heights 7/8; Cam Tea & Ember and Meow Me Cat House share Jalan Austin Heights 7/7 — two walkable pairs, a short Grab hop apart.
- Avoid Wednesdays. Cam Tea & Ember and Meow Me Cat House both close on Wednesday, and Slow Day runs short hours Monday to Thursday. Friday to Sunday, everything is open late.
- Book the experiences. Siblings Gelato Lab needs a two-pax minimum; Cam Tea & Ember recommends a WhatsApp reservation. The rest take walk-ins, especially weekdays.
- Payment. Many JB cafés are fully cashless — bring a card (a multi-currency card helps; see our YouTrip vs Wise vs cash comparison), plus some ringgit as backup.
- Halal note. None of the eight is halal-certified. Bloom by Mok Mok and The Blue Door Coffee House state they use no pork or lard; confirm directly with any café before visiting.
- Make it a half-day. Cafés till mid-afternoon, then Grab 5–10 minutes to AEON Tebrau, Toppen or IKEA Tebrau for dinner and shopping.
Honest caveats
KNOCKNOCK's prices and hours come from 2024 sources and its coffee gets mixed reviews — go for the ambience and mains. This scene churns fast: first-floor shophouse units open, rebrand and close regularly, so an Instagram check on the day beats any guide, this one included. And Kirin's viral "toothbrush coffee" is a photo gimmick first, a drink second.
The RTS angle
Today, Mount Austin means crossing at Woodlands, then a 15–25 minute Grab from the CIQ. When the RTS Link opens around end-2026, the same ride applies from Bukit Chagar station — but with a five-minute train crossing replacing the Causeway squeeze, a café half-day here becomes an after-work option, not just a weekend one. Our RTS Link guide explains how the crossing will work; the news page tracks the timeline. For everything else to eat, see the JB food guide and the visit directory.
